What is a Grade Calculator?

A grade calculator is a free online tool that helps students and educators quickly compute weighted grades, convert between percentages, letter grades, and points, and estimate overall course results and GPA.

Knowing your current standing makes it easier to set targets for upcoming assignments and finals. This calculator shows your weighted average and converts it into a letter grade and GPA on a standard scale—so you can plan what you need to reach your goal grade before the end of the term.

Whether you’re a student aiming for a specific GPA or a teacher managing multiple classes, our online grade calculator streamlines the math, reduces mistakes, and helps you stay on top of academic goals.

How to Use the Grade Calculator

1

Select Grade Type

Choose how you’ll enter scores: Percent (%), Letter (A–F), or Points (earned/total). You can mix many assessments with different weights.

2

Input Assignments

For each assessment, add the name, your grade, and its weight in the course. We normalize weights automatically, so results work even if weights don’t add to 100 yet.

3

Calculate Results

Click Calculate to see your weighted average (percentage), the matching letter grade, and the GPA on a 4.0/4.33 scale.

Grade Calculation Formula

Weighted Grade Formula

Weighted Grade = (w₁ × g₁ + w₂ × g₂ + w₃ × g₃ + …) / (w₁ + w₂ + w₃ + …)

Here, w is the weight of each assessment (e.g., Final = 40) and g is the grade (as a percent) for that assessment. The calculator handles conversions from letters and points to percent automatically.

Examples

Percentage Example

  • Assignment 1: 80% (Weight: 30%)
  • Assignment 2: 90% (Weight: 20%)
  • Final Exam: 72% (Weight: 50%)
Result: 78%

Weighted average of all components.

Letter Grade Example

  • Quiz 1: A- (Weight: 20%)
  • Midterm: B (Weight: 20%)
  • Final: C- (Weight: 60%)
Result: 2.64 GPA

Letters are mapped to GPA on a standard 4.33 scale.

Points Example

  • Test 1: 60/80 (Weight: 25%)
  • Assignment: 30/50 (Weight: 15%)
  • Final: 120/120 (Weight: 35%)
  • Project: 60/100 (Weight: 25%)
Result: 77.14%

Points are converted to percent before weighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Passing thresholds vary by institution and program. Many courses define a passing grade as D or 60%+, but competitive majors may require a higher minimum. Check your syllabus and campus policy.

Divide points earned by total points and multiply by 100. Example: 85 ÷ 100 = 0.85 → 85%. The calculator converts points to percent for you and applies the correct weight.

A zero can significantly reduce your average—especially on high-weight items (midterms/finals). Add a zero-grade assignment with its weight to visualize the impact.

A weighted GPA accounts for course rigor. For example, honors/AP courses may award up to 5.0 for an A instead of 4.0. Our calculator shows a standard GPA; check your school’s policy for weighted conversions.

No. The calculator normalizes weights based on what you enter. For the best accuracy, use the weights listed in your syllabus (e.g., Quizzes 20%, Midterm 30%, Final 50%).

Add your completed items with their grades and weights. For the final, enter its weight and try different scores until the overall percentage reaches your goal (e.g., 90%+ for an A).

Percent is a direct 0–100 score. Letter uses a standard A–F scale and converts to percent/GPA. Points divides earned by total, then converts to percent before weighting.
